BTYST Exhibition

App Developed for the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition

The BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition (BT YSTE) at the RDS has upwards of 45,000 people attending every year to see the hundreds of projects competing for the coveted title of BT Young Scientist & Technologist of the Year. For its 2013 Exhibition BT YSTE partnered with Digital Skills Academy’s WebElevate programme to develop an app for visitors.

The mobile web app, designed to work with most mobile devices and tablets helps visitors get the best experience from the exhibition as they navigate the projects, awards, and live shows which in 2013 included The World of Robots, Titan the Robot, It Takes Guts and Sci-Five, with experiments from W5’s astonishing experiments team. The app features interactive maps, entertainment listings, event timetable, social media connections, as well as the ability to search projects by name, county, theme and school.

The app was developed by participants of Digital Skills Academy’s WebElevate Programme, in partnership with BT Ireland. The WebElevate programme is a digital technology and game development programme which retrains graduate jobseekers in in-demand skills for employment in the digital technology sector, where there is strong jobs growth. Designed to reflect a real working environment, participants get to put their skills into practice by working on real-world projects for companies looking to develop their next digital innovation. The programme is delivered by Digital Skills Academy with Dublin Institute of Technology as the awarding body.

Launching the BTYSTE app, Larry Taylor, Online and Social Media Manager, BT Ireland said, “As the exhibition continues to grow and break new records, we wanted to develop an app that helps visitors to get the best experience from their trip and enable them to see as many of the projects, exhibits and attractions as possible. Developing the app with the WebElevate programme has been an excellent experience and I congratulate the participants on producing a really well designed app that we hope thousands of people will enjoy.”

Paul Dunne, CEO of Digital Skills Academy said “We are really proud of the work our WebElevate participants have achieved in developing a high quality app for the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition. Supporting companies to develop their next digital innovation, provides our participants with invaluable real-world experience, which further supports them in securing future employment. Our WebElevate participants have hugely benefited from the experience of developing this first-class app and working with the BT Ireland team.”
